Bilbo's lines could be seen as directed at Fox. Read them as breaking the fourth wall and addressing me as the author for a second level of meaning.

Heh, why not, your characters have broken the fourth wall plenty of times before.. also things are gonna go bad when Mary Beth sees the real Fox...

I'm sure it's been used before, but "This is gonna suck" is now one of my favorite lines in any comic.
