Don't feel bad - The average reader is *supposed* to be identifying with 13 here. I haven't really given any firm clues as to what's about to be revealed. (Although it should make sense once you know it.)

Mostly I'm poking fun at myself and my habit of over-twisting the plot.

No, Chris's plots are so elastic he can twist them as much as he likes - only thing is that they get very stretched in the process...
